Expectations Talk
Objectives:
This is a talk for each group to do individually. After the groups are divided they may immediately be sent off to complete the talk.
Note: all words in italics are for directions for you. Words in regular type are the talk itself. Words in all CAPITALS are main points for everyone to record in their notebooks/journals. These may be questions that should be answered in discussion as well as written down.
Begin by stating your name again and something about yourself such as where you are from. Each participant should do the same.
Reinforce the importance of honesty, respect, and be willing to be open and to share and to listen. Give an example from your own experience of a time when you were faced with a new situation and had to be open with others.
Ask the following questions, giving each person, including yourself, a chance to respond out loud:
There are no "wrong answers" to these questions. If the answers given are very short, discuss them a little more to find out more about the group members. After discussing these questions, ask this last reflection question:
The group should now discuss this openly and come up with an answer to give to the whole group. At this point, "brainstorm," that is, write down all your answers even if some are better than others. Then come up with a summary as your group answer. Remember, your enthusiasm as group leader is important. It sets the tone for the group. Be open, up front, and positive. Do everything you can to create an open, caring, and relaxed atmosphere in which everyone feels comfortable sharing.
Elect one person to act as spokesperson who will announce your group answer to the group leader. Return to the main group to report your conclusions.
