Choices
Retreat
Introductory Talk
Objectives:
Activity #1: Retreat Theme Song
Begin by saying, This retreat is a chance to talk about things we can’t always do anywhere else:
Pass out lyrics for the Retreat Theme Song. The song should reflect the key idea of the importance of the choices we make in this life and how they impact on our whole life and our relationship with God. The song may not explicitly state the theme so concisely but should at least reflect the idea clearly. Play the song. Afterwards, ask the group as a whole what they think the song lyrics say about making choices.
Activity #2: Choices Chain
Purpose: The chain of choices is an example of a unifying symbol for the Choices retreat. Each choice we make is linked to every other choice we make and others make. At the same time, each present choice limits our future choices. The paradox arises that we are each chained by the choices we make. Our freedom comes when we unite our will to God, the ultimate source of Freedom and Good. The Choices Chain explores this symbolism.
To make the chain of choices you will need several materials. Sturdy construction paper at least is recommended, which can be cut into ring shapes for chain links. Another option would be to use wide fabric ribbons upon which participants can write in pen or marker. Since time is often short, these materials should be in order before the session starts.
Each person takes one chain link and must write down the following three things on their link. If time permits, have them discuss these questions in their groups:
They should also record these in their journals. They do not have to put their names on their chains if they do not want to. When done with this, each person should come forward and link their chain link to another until there is one long line. This represents how our choices are all connected as our lives are all connected. How we support each other and how we affect each other.
Later in the retreat there are optional activities to use the choices chain. The nicer it looks the more significant it will be as well, so feel free to develop creative uses of materials. Such a chain may become an important offering to the Church School décor. As part of the closing, you should return to the "choices chain" as not only a symbol but as an offering and a prayer to God.
